“Buy frequently used spices in bulk & make your own blends!” - Tara Olson
Spice blends are simple to create in your own kitchen!
Some of the most expensive items on my grocery list are dried herbs and spices. As I began cooking at home more frequently, I began to notice that many of the recipes called for "Italian Seasoning" or "Taco Seasoning." I was a recipe follower and would diligently put Italian Seasoning (or whatever blend was called for) on my grocery list. This changed for me when I started buying my groceries in bulk.
I was perusing the shelves of my favorite bulk shopping store & I noticed how much less expensive per ounce it was to purchase dried herbs and spices in bulk. That began my quest to learn how to make my own blends.
One of the big benefits of making your own blends is you know exactly what is in each blend. For example, if you are working to reduce your salt intake, you can make blends that are low salt or salt free.
Following is a blend I use frequently, Homemade Italian Seasoning. I use it when I'm cooking Italian food, but it also gives meatloaf, hamburger patties, grilled or baked chicken and fish a nice kick. Enjoy!
Ingredients
1 Tblsp dried basil
1 Tblsp dried thyme
1 Tblsp dried rosemary
1 Tblsp marjoram
1 Tblsp dried parsley
2 Tblsp dried oregano
1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Transfer the mixture to a jar with a lid that closes securely.
I don't remember the origin of this blend. It may have come from the AllRecipes or themediterraneandish websites.
